Pyramid on a Plate #3: Healthy Italian Food Exposed

For the third and last “Eating the Pyramid” installment, I asked world-renowned nutritionist, Dr. Walter Willett and his wonderful wife, Gail to help show us how to eat healthy at an Italian restaurant

It was ESPECIALLY challenging since the Willetts had just flown back from Venice, Italy where they had eaten fabulous food. I chose Davio’s Restaurant, a Boston Italian institution which, even after MANY years is still very good.

As you can see, they had NO PROBLEM giving us superb fresh, simple, and DELICIOUS food that satisfied all of our USDA Pyramid needs. (Even my friend from Turin Italy, who tagged along to watch and sample was impressed!)

We’ve included the “Harvard School of Public Health’ revised pyramid. As you can see, even at a glance, it’s so much easier to understand and follow than the USDA Pyramid.

There you have it…. “Eating the Pyramid, Chinese, American, and Italian”.

Notes from Steve:
This episode was shot on a Nokia N95 and edited with Final Cut Pro. That’s me in the intro, finding out how hot a kitchen can get! It was really hot. The most interesting thing I found out was that you don’t have to settle for steamed vegetables to eat healthy. I always thought that steamed was the best way to eat vegetables, but I learned that they can be grilled with a healthy oil AND taste great!

This has certainly put Davio’s on our “must try” list of Boston eateries. The grilled veggies looked awesome. Love that one can enjoy fried calamari without guilt. :) My wife is very into organic foods now, so it’s nice to see a restaurant taking it seriously.
